The World Cup comes to Meds

Managers, Club Officials and players were treated to a "hands-on" view of the World Cup at the recent Meds Annual Soccer Festival. The picture shows Club Officials Mike Hassall, Dave Stead and Stuart Nichols holding the prized trophy which we hope will be held by Rio in a few weeks time. Of course this was not the real deal but a very realistic (and heavy) replica used by tournament photographers "DE PHOTO" who attend every year. It proved a very popular prop for the photographers and all photos taken at this year's and previous years' tournaments can be viewed at the DE PHOTO website This year's Tournament was once again a major success with almost 200 teams competing over the 4 day period and a number of Meds teams enjoying success. The weather also played it's part for a change and helped to make it a carnival atmosphere throughout both weekends.

Meds Storm U11s County Cup Winners

A great spectacle to finish the season saw our very own Meds "Storm" bring home a winners trophy - the prestigious U11 Manchester County Cup. It was a very close game with both teams keeping pace with the scoring. De La Salle had the best of the first half and went two goals ahead early on but the tide turned at the break and the Storm threw everything at them in the second half. At the final whistle the teams could not be separated and extra time ensued. It was still deadlocked after the first period of extra time but finally the deadlock was broken in the second period and the Storm ran out final winners 7-4

A unique treble for MEDS & recognition for Dave

The Club has just been advised that for the third year running we have won the Manchester FA “Charter Standard Community Club of the Year” award. This is a remarkable achievement and no other Club has ever done this. Andy Basterfield, Senior Football Development Officer at Manchester FA, says, “ Whilst it is unusual to achieve the award for 3 consecutive years, Urmston Meadowside continue to set the standards”. The Club will now go forward for consideration for the North West Regional Award. There was also more good news with Dave Wright, our vice-Chairman winning the Manchester FA “Volunteer of the Year 2010” award, in recognition of his unrelenting fund raising efforts for our new clubhouse. Dave’s efforts have helped us raise around £120k towards the Clubhouse and this award is well deserved.

MEDS meet Wayne Rooney

Members of the Club recently attended the Manchester FA Grassroots Dinner where the special guest was non other than the newly crowned “Footballer of the Year”, Wayne Rooney. The dinner was held at Lancashire Cricket Club with 500 people attending. During the evening the Club was re-presented with it’s National Community Club of the Year award by Wayne himself. The picture shows our (soon to be) new Club Secretary, Damian Preston, receiving the plaque from Wayne. This was a special moment for Damian being a staunch United fan, unlike certain other Club members from the ‘ Blue Half of Manchester ‘ who took up a back row position in the photogragh, having been dumped out of the Carling Cup the night before from a last minute Rooney goal! Meds National Award presented at Wembley

On 5th September, Meds were special guests of the FA in London for the recent England vs Slovenia game to officially receive the Club's National Charter Standard Award. John Burnett, the Meds Chairman and Dave Stead, the Club Development Manger were invited to the game where they were dined at the prestigious FA Club at Wembley Stadium and then presented with the coveted FA National Charter Standard Community Club of the Year Award for 2009.
The Club had already won the equivalent award for Manchester FA and the North West Regional FA. The commemorative plaque was presented to John in the players tunnel and photographs were taken on the hallowed Wembley turf.
The picture in the tunnel shows John Burnett with Ray Berridge and Jonathan Hall from the FA and the legendary Sir Geoff Hurst.

Meds secure Grant from Sport England

The Club is very grateful to Sport England who have just sanctioned a £4000 grant to help with the Club's growth and development. The award will help fund new playing kit and equipment together with money to cover the cost of sending several new coaches onto FA Level 1 courses. One of the much welcomed items of equipment will be the purchase of new 16 x 7ft i-goals for our 9 v 9 sides.

Be part of the first Meadowside Vets Team - History in the making

The first ever Meadowside Vets team is finally about to get underway. The 'Gaffers' shall be Messrs Damo Preston & Dave 'The Kitman' Ritchie.

The league will commence at the end of September so we intend to try and get 2 friendly games under our belt by then. For those that don't know the format of this new league please click on the link below:

Clcik here for more info

The very handsome Mr. Richardson is placing a kit order (plenty of XL shirts being the order of the day!!) I will communicate the dates for friendlies and the league fixtures proper as and when I have them... I also reckon we may do some ‘light’ training on the odd occasion – perhaps followed by a pint!
In the meantime if you could please let me know if you are Over 35 and 'UP FOR IT' it would be much appreciated.
It is anticipated that the friendly games will be week day nights over the next 3 weeks - apologies to those that can't make it.
However, we need a squad of about 30 to carry this off (a squad of 16 can turn up for the Friday night game) so let’s get as many registered as we can to start off.

Kind Regards,

MEDS Boys and Girls Visit Wembley 2009

On Thursday 6th August two under 10s teams from Urmston Meadowside (boys and girls) realised a "once in a lifetime" dream by playing (and winning) at Wembley.
The day got off to a very early start with the coach leaving Urmston at 04:00. We arrived at Northwick Park (close to Wembley) at 09:30 and then proceeded to play a number of friendlies against other teams from around the country. This was all part of the McDonalds National Football Festival. There were also coaching areas and inflatables set up for the youngsters to have-a-go on. There were coaching sessions run by Eric Harrison (ex Man United youth coach) who is now head of coaching at McDonalds.
At 13:45 we got back on to the coach for the short trip to Wembley Stadium and the atmosphere on board grew as the now famous arch came into sight.

Once inside the stadium the teams were led out through the players tunnel into the home of football. After a group photo involving almost 1000 young players the first teams were led onto the pitch (pausing on the way to meet and have a photo taken with the legend that is Sir Geoff Hurst.)

Both the boys and the girls team won their respective games on the hallowed turf in front of 2,500 screaming parents and family members; and for the boys team this topped off a fine day which had seen them concede no goals at all throughout the day.The teams were then led up to the royal box where all the players received a commemorative medal.

Playing at Wembley is an honour that many professional players never experience so for the youngsters and coaches involved, it will be a memory to cherish. All in all a fantastic day out and an experience that will no doubt be handed down through future generations as we can all say "We were there!"

Urmston Meadowside- Number 1 Charter Standard Community Club in the Country

Urmston Meadowside awarded National FA Charter Standard Community Club accolade for 2009.

Greater Manchester’s biggest grassroots football Club, are again celebrating today after winning the prestigious FA National Charter Standard Community Club of the Year for 2009. Urmston Meadowside who will be operating 45 teams for season 2009/2010 providing football for both male and female at Mini Soccer, Junior, Open Age, have been confirmed as the FA’s National Charter Standard Community Club of the Year. The award follows on from their success in both the Manchester County, and North West Regional awards, with over 50 other County winners originally competing to become number one in the Country. The award will be presented to Meds club officials later this year at one of the England fixtures taking place at Wembley stadium.

Charter Standard recognises good practice in Grassroots Football through a number of ways including Child Welfare, Coaching, and Administration. The Charter Standard Community award is the top award within the FA’s Kitemark programme. Med’s Development Manager Dave Stead said “For the Club to win this coveted National Award is a fantastic achievement, and everyone who is associated with the Club should be really proud. We are absolutely delighted. The award recognises all the hard work everyone at the Club undertakes, and all within their own spare time’.

No one was more delighted at Meds than their long serving Chairman, John Burnett who has been with the Club from day one, way back in 1977. Says John, “When I got involved with the very first Meds team in 1977, I could never have imagined how much the Club would grow and what it would achieve. We have really taken off in recent years, particularly since becoming a Charter Standard Club. To achieve this National Award is THE major highlight in the Club’s history” Manchester FA’s Development Officer Andy Basterfield added “For a Manchester club to win such an important National award is fantastic both for them and the County FA. Everyone here at Manchester FA is delighted for all concerned with the Club. Urmston Meadowside continue to offer fantastic football opportunities for all, & at very high standards, continually support everything we do here at Manchester FA. They are a fantastic example of Good Practice in Football, and a credit to the Grassroots Game”.

Success off the pitch has also been mirrored on the pitch with a number of successes in league and cup competitions, for various age groups, and further appearances in numerous Cup Finals. Combined with a recent application to the Football Foundation for a new Clubhouse, these are very exciting times for the Club as a whole, and everyone at Urmston Meadowside can’t wait to start the new 2009/10 season.

MEDS Team of the Year 2009

This year's Team of the Year award went to Meds U13s Girls - the first time a girls team has won this prize. The Girls team have had yet another very successful season in 2008/2009 by winning the League & Cup double. The girls also achieved a similar feat in the previous season. The Team of the Year trophy was presented at the Club Presentation Evening on 20th June and caught manager Paul Harvey by surprise. Said Paul, " I am absolutely delighted for the girls, they have had a great season and deserve the recognition. We are all very proud to be the first Girls team to win this trophy" The picture shows the winning line up at the League Cup Final played at Flixton FC. We now look forward to continued success as U14s in the forthcoming season.

A "Double Double" award for Meds

Following on from our recent award from Manchester FA as their FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year 2009, we have been notified that the Club has once again won the North West Regional FA Community Club of the Year 2009 for the second year in succession. This means that we have basically retained our titles from 2008. No other football club has won any of these awards 2 years running. Says John Burnett our Chairman " It is a remarkably achievement to have won both awards yet again and shows how much the FA recognises the good work undertaken by the Club. I would like to thank all the managers, coaches and everyone connected with Meds for their efforts throughout last season. We have now been put forward for the National FA Award which would be fantastic if we could make it a hat-trick for 2009 in the same year that we hope to start work on the new Clubhouse. We are now building up quite a collection of plaques for display in our Community Room once the Clubhouse is completed."

Clubperson of the Year Awards 2009

The Club has made 3 special awards for contributions made during the season 2008/2009. Firstly, the "Young Clubperson of the Year Award" was won by Paul Stead. Paul was instrumental in ensuring the continuity of the U13s Eagles team following the departure of its manager in mid-season. Paul took over as manager and whilst results did not go entirely as he would have preferred due to some player departures he has kept the group together and created a good team spirit. Paul also helps in the running of the U17s team and is a key coach with the very successful 3 Lions Scheme.
The second award, "Special Recognition Award" went to Sue Richardson our Club Secretary. When Sue came into this role she had limited footballing background in terms of how the Club is run (apart from listening to Dave), but she soon applied her excellent organisational skills and coupled with a commonsense approach has become one of our most valued committee members. This is certainly a well deserved award.

The final award, the "Clubperson of the Year" was won by Jim Brown our U8s coach and Club Welfare Officer. In his short time with the Club, Jim has developed a thriving junior section at U7s and U8s through his dedication and committment. Jim is an inspiration to his fellow coaches, his players and their parents (he is the self-styled 'housewives favourite' ). This year Jim was elected onto the Exec Committee as Club Welfare Officer and was immediately confronted with some difficult issues which he dealt with in a very professional manner. His enthusiasm and humour rub off onto his coaching team who all ensure the continued success of this age group.

"The Awards just keep coming"

The Club has received yet another award by once again winning the Manchester FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year for 2009. The FA continues to recognise all the hard work undertaken by Urmston Meadowside within the local community. This is the second consecutive year that the Club has won the award and is also the 4th time that we have achieved this recognition having won it in 2003, 2005, 2008 and now, this year. Four Members of the Executive Committee were invited to Manchester FA in Salford on the evening of Thursday 11th June to be presented with the Award plaque. The picture shows Dave Wright, our vice chairman receiving the plaque from Frank Hannah (President of Manchester FA). Also in the picture are Sue Richardson, Dave Stead and Jim Brown. There was also a unique opportunity for all award winners to have their photo taken with the silverware won by Manchester United during the season just finished. The other photo shows our 4 club officials with the Carling Cup, the Manchester Senior Cup, the Premiership Trophy and the World Club Trophy - you can imagine the comments made by Jim Brown to the other 2 'Daves' who are both City fans !!

MEDS form a link with STEGTA

Our Club has recently formed a link with Salford and Trafford Engineering Group Training Association Ltd (STEGTA) which could give job opportunities for young Club members and at the same time benefit the Club financially. STEGTA have just sponsored our U13s Meteors and it is through manager Vinny Eckersley and former coach Ian Parker that the arrangement has been formed. STEGTA can offer apprenticeships to young people aged 16 and over. Anyone from Meds wishing to apply should state that they have been referred by Meds. STEGTA will then pay the Club a fee if the applicant is successful in obtaining an apprenticeship. For more information, go to the STEGTA website www.stegta.co.uk

"Motty" presents Award to Meds (Jan 09)

Senior members of the Club were recently invited to the Manchester FA Grassroots Gala Dinner where Meds was presented with the  FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year plaque for 2008. This follows our very successful year where the Club won both the Manchester FA award and the North West of England award. The presentation was made to the Club by the legendary football commentator John Motson (yes, he did wear his sheepskin coat for his after dinner speech).

Manchester to Blackpool Cycle 2008 - Fundraising

Dave Wright, Meds Fundraising Manager, his sister and fellow club committee member Gill Weaver joined the 6000 plus riders on Sunday 13th July and cycled from Manchester to Blackpool to raise funds for the new clubhouse development fund. After 5 hours and 68 miles in the saddle Dave and Gill, together with their family team, finally arrived at South Shore, Blackpool in bright sunshine and in front of large crowds who'd gathered to watch all the cyclists finish. Despite heavy legs, sore 'bootys' and sunburnt legs, they were happy in the knowledge that they'd completed the distance and raised valuable funds for the club.

North West Regional FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year 2008

More great news! Following on closely behind our award from Manchester FA, we have been informed that Urmston Meadowside has won the FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year 2008 for the North West of England. We are now shortlisted for the National Award which is a super reflection of the work which goes on in the club and the Urmston community. The Award is due to be presented to the Club during July.

Special Guest at Meds Presentation Night

The Club was delighted to welcome a very special guest at our final presentation evening on June 20th. Roger Reade, the Chief Executive of Manchester FA accepted our invitation to attend the evening and presented the 3 Lions medals to those boys and girls who had just finished the 3 month coaching course run by our club coaches in our partnership schools. Roger said he had got a real "buzz" from the evening and had been very impressed with everything that the Club is doing in the community. He made a particular reference to our environmental/green policy and felt we must be one of the first to introduce such a policy. Roger and his team at Manchester FA are, like ourselves, keeping fingers crossed for the National Award for CS community club of the year. Watch this space............

Another Prestige Award for Meds (June 08)

Meds have won another major award – The Manchester FA’s “ Charter Standard Community Club of the Year 2008”. This is the third time in the last six years that Meds have won the award, a feat not achieved by any other Club.

Also in the picture is Frank Hannah, the Manchester FA President & Chairman.  Says Sue, “ this award recognises the hard work put in by everyone associated with the Cub and shows that Manchester FA appreciate the way in which we run our Club”.  Andy Basterfield, the Football Development Officer at Manchester FA will now be submitting our nomination for consideration for the Regional Award.

Meds entered 15 teams into this year Manchester FA Mini-soccer festival held at the Salford Sports Village in June. Whilst the Festival is run as a "friendly" tournament where each player receives a medallion, the organizers award a Number of "Fair Play Trophies" to selected teams. (Feb 08) Another Prestige Award for Meds

The annual Trafford Sports Awards Evening was held in February to recognise special achievers in sport within the borough of Trafford during 2007. Our Club Chairman, John Burnett, was presented with the "Unsung Hero in Sport Award" beating a host of very strong nominations. This follows on from last year's success when both Dave Stead and the Club itself won awards. John was recognised for his services to grassroots football, which span a continuous period in excess of 30 years. He was one of the founder members of Meds where he has moved from coach to manager to Secretary and currently, Chairman. In addition to this, John has had a long active role within the running of the Timperley & District Junior League where he also holds the position of chairman. His involvement in football does not stop there - he is also a member of the Altrincham & District FA committee and is in charge of the District FA Youth Team. John will now attend the Greater Manchester regional awards ceremony in April and compete with similar winners from the other 9 boroughs.

The picture shows John being presented with his trophy and certificate by Jonny Cowan, a top international table tennis player. The other picture shows John with Sue Richardson and Dave Stead who also attended the evening.

(Oct 07) An Evening with Sir Trevor Brooking

Representatives of the Club, who are members of the Manchester FA Coaches Association, enjoyed an opportunity to meet Sir Trevor Brooking recently at the Manchester FA headquarters in Salford. Sir Trevor is the FA's Director of Football Development. The purpose of his visit was to introduce the new FA Skills Coach Programme to the Coaches Association. The programme is aimed at developing 5-11 year old children and introduces new methods of coaching, some of which were demonstrated on the all weather pitch to a group of volunteer attendees. Sir Trevor believes that this initiative will ultimately provide future England teams with a higher standard of player - with maybe one or two from our own talented youngsters !

The picture below shows Dave Stead, Pierce Moloney, Steve Coy, Andy Stead, Dan Shea and Andy Gater with Sir Trevor at the evening's event.

(July 07) An American team from Irmo Varsity, South Carolina visit AFC Urmston Meds

An American team visited from Irmo Varsity in South Carolina. After a close game the Meds U14 girls won 3-2. The visitors had toured Scotland and were on their way down to London after stopping in Manchester. The whole day went brilliantly with a buffet laid on after the match and Meds presented the opposition with shirts, a signed ball and a pennant. Irmo asked us to visit them in the near future, a promise manager Dave Pollitt is certainly contemplating. Click here for more photos.

Meds U11 Eagles are the Team of the Year (2006/07)

This year's (06/07) "Team of the Year" award went to the all-conquering U11s Eagles. In what was a great season for the team they finished as league champions and cup winners. The team almost made it a treble success but was knocked out of the Manchester FA Youth Cup in the semi-finals. All the players received a special individual Team of the Year trophy at the Meds Presentation Evening. The boys continued their success winning the Meadowside Tournament in May and the Plate competitions at other Tournaments in Blackpool. Congratulations to Steve and Pat and all the team.

FA 3 Lions Coaching Programme

AFC Urmston Meadowside FA 3 Lions Scheme

Urmston Meadowside have just completed another very successful "FA 3 Lions Coaching Program". This is the 4th year that the club has run this popular event. The program is run jointly between a selected Charter Standard Club, the FA and a School Sports Partnership. It is part of the FA's School-Club Link activities. Meds already deliver football coaching within the Trafford Sports Partnership for the Flixton Family of Schools. Manchester FA invited Meds to run a 12 week "3 Lions Scheme" between March and June, involving Year 1 boys & girls and Year 3 & 4 girls from the partnership schools.

Dave Stead the Club's Development Manager and John Burnett, the Club Chairman have managed the 2008 FA 3 Lions Coaching course. The success of the program was down to the close contact and promotion undertaken by Dave within the Schools coupled with the high quality of coaching delivered by the Meds coaches. An average of 75 children have attended the sessions, which aim to teach and improve soccer skills but most of all provide a fun experience. At the end of the course all participants were invited to a Presentation Evening, where, each child received a personalized laminated Certificate and a souvenir medal. To make this year's presentations, the Club were delighted to have a special guest, Roger Reade, the Chief Executive of Manchester FA. Roger spent the evening with the club following our recent achievement in winning the Charter Standard Community Club awards for both Manchester and the North West. Many of the 3 Lions children have now joined Meadowside and now attend our regular training sessions.

What is a 3 Lions FC Coaching Course?

•  3 Lions FC is an eight to twelve week football coaching course designed by the FA specifically for girls and boys to assist them to move from playing football at school to playing for an affiliated FA Charter Standard Club.
•  It offers young people a quality football experience coached by FA qualified coaches or teachers.
•  It gives players the opportunity to improve and develop their football techniques and skills in a safe and well organized environment.

MEDS Celebrates 30 years of Football in the Community

This year sees the Club celebrate its 30th Anniversary and to mark the special occasion, the Club held a Gala Dinner Dance at Lancashire County Cricket Club at which over 270 people attended. Amongst the attendees were players and managers past and present as well as parents, relatives, friends and sponsors of the Club. The evening was a major success with guest speaker Fred Eyre entertaining everyone with some side-splitting stories of his life in football. It was also a special occasion for 2 particular people. Firstly, John Rushton our Club President who is not known to many because he now lives in Cyprus and has done for some time. John flew over specially to be at the celebrations. We owe a lot to John and his son Kevin (who also attended) because these were the people responsible for setting up this great Club of ours way back in 1977. The Club presented John with a special embroidered Meds polo shirt to take back home with him. Secondly, our chairman, John Burnett who is also a founder member of the Club and has been involved for the full 30 year duration. John was presented with a glass trophy in recognition of his work for the Club.

It was also interesting to see 4 founder members of the very first Meadowside team from 1977. These were Andy Burnett, Kevin Rushton, Paul Eccles and Mike Goring. Mike, of course is well known to current members as he is the manager of one of our U12s teams. Paul is also back involved, helping to coach the U7s kids. We now look forward to what the next 30 years brings - the Premiership perhaps !!

Meadowside Annual Soccer Festival

During May each year, MEDS runs its annual six-a-side Soccer Festival. This takes place over 2 weekends and is one of the biggest and best-supported events of its type in the North West. In 2008, over 200 teams entered from all over Greater Manchester and parts of Cheshire and Lancashire bringing with them an estimated 5000 visitors.

An Audience with Bryan Robson & The FA Cup

On February 16th 2007, Urmston Meadowside were privileged to be invited to an exciting event involving Manchester United & England legend Bryan Robson and the FA Cup. The event was organised by Umbro Sportswear and was one of a number of nationwide 'road shows' to promote the FA Cup to youngsters. Umbro are the current official balls suppliers for the FA Cup.
Meds were specially selected by Manchester FA to meet "Robbo" at their Salford headquarters. Almost 60 children from the U8s boys, U11s boys, U12s boys, U13s boys and U12s girls went across to Salford to meet Bryan and were given the opportunity to ask him questions in a one hour Q & A session. They then had their photo taken with Bryan and the FA Cup.
Each team was then given an hour's use of the new all weather pitch to conduct a training session. Bryan spent time with every coaching session group and joined in the routines giving his expert advice to the Meds youngsters.
This was a high profile event and was covered by 2 national newspapers, the Manchester Evening News and the Messenger. In addition, there was live coverage on Key 103 and Century FM radio stations. Despite the rain it was a day to remember for the Meds players and coaches as well as the parents who attended. The Club was very grateful to Paul Bright from Manchester FA for choosing to invite Meds; to Bryan for giving up his time to spend with our players and to Umbro for organising the event and giving the Club 2 autographed (by Bryan) footballs to help our fund raising efforts.

Trafford School Sports Partnership

The School Sports Partnership scheme links local schools with local sports clubs. Through these links, children are provided with coaching from sports club coaches, normally after hours. In a sense, the running of these sporting activities is contracted out to the local sports club. In order to be invited to join a partnership, the sports club must have a charter mark and be generally recognised as making a significant contribution to the community.

As a result, Urmston Meadowside is the 'football partner' for the Flixton 'family' of schools which includes Flixton Infants, Flixton Junior, St Mary’s Primary, Woodhouse Primary, Kingsway Primary and Flixton Girls High. Meds run the 3 Lions Coaching programme for these schools.

The Lees Field Development

The Club is pushing ahead with its plans to build a new Clubhouse at our Lees Field site with a new 6 changing room facility, which will also incorporate a kitchen and Café/Meeting Room. The project is supported by Trafford Council (Sports Development) and the Manchester FA. Funding for the project will be sought from various avenues with the main funding application directed towards the Football Foundation. There are many fund raising activities on the go. The Club will also be seeking corporate sponsorship to try to meet any shortfalls in the total cost. It is intended that the facility will be shared with local schools and youth groups.

Friendship in Sport

Over the years Meds has built relationships with Clubs from other parts of the country as well as abroad. Each summer we regularly entertain teams from abroad which are referred to us by the FA. Last year, the Ladies Team played Juniata College (USA) at Trafford FC ground and won 2-1. In previous year's we have entertained teams from Philadelphia, Boston USA, Belgium and have connections with Eurosport.

Our senior mens team recently visited Anglesey in North Wales to play local club Llangoed F.C.
Meds won the game 7-1
