4.9.10, Meds Vikings vs Sale United B

4.9.10, Meds Vikings vs Sale United B

I'm not sure who was more nervous before our opening fixture, the kids or the coaches. There is a lot to learn and take in for all of us, but the whole morning was a great success, even the weather was really kind to us.

We began the first 15 minute period a little slowly, all trying to adjust and get to grips with the game. Sale United B were well organised and had some talented individual players. We conceded a goal quite early, but the lads didn't get phased by it and plugged away, getting more and more into the game. Tyler made some crucial saves, and all players dug deep and worked hard.
1st period, 0-1 (0-1) overall.

The second period began and we looked much brighter, quicker to the ball and were starting to string the passes together. We were beginning to test their goalkeeper more, Charlie always looking to burst through on goal and Xavier was willing to support. Our defensive players, Aaron, Harry and Sam were gaining confidence and working well together, Aaron's passing was very impressive. We had much more of the play in the second period, and deserved a goal, but it just didn't quite come.
2nd period 0-0 (0-1 overall)

Before the 3rd and final period the lads were very upbeat, we knew we were on top and the goal would come. We dominated this period, Xavier was superb in midfield, Charlie chased everything, Luke, Tom and Lewis ran their hearts out in midfield and didn't give the Sale players time to settle. Sam swapped from midfield to defence and was excellent in both positions. Tyler didn't have a great deal to do in this section, but when called upon he was very safe, and we gained from his long kicks. Eventually the goal came, a string of passes was finished off by Charlie slotting the ball home. A number of chances followed but Sale clung on, in fairness a draw was maybe the correct result.
3rd period 1-0 (1-1 overall) MAN OF THE MATCH - XAVIER

A great start on and off the pitch, the boys tried so hard all game, and got stronger as the match went on. As usual they showed great character and a brilliant attitude. Sincere thanks to the parents, very supportive and vocal in cheering on the Vikings. Quick mention to young referee Joe McLoughlin, he had a great game and it was lovely to hear him encouraging and praising both sets of players during the match.
