6/11/10 - Meds AWAY to Benchill Celtic B

Another beautiful Saturday morning for an away game versus Benchill Celtic was well anticipated following our recent results - and it was not to disappoint !

From another full squad to pick from for this game I wanted to try some players in different positions to see how the team adapted. So we saw some first time goalkeepers in Rob, James and Alex who all did really well. To start - the team set up with Louis up front, Patrick and Max in Midfield and Alex, James and Tom in defence. And it was a fairly slow start with the team getting used to this formation and, at times, waiting for the ball to come to them rather than going after the play.

After a few chances were saved by Benchill, Louis managed to get a couple of goals with good passing from the team. This seemed to settle any nerves that we had and we also managed to contain Benchill to a couple of breakaway shots that Rob and the defence did well to keep out.

The second period saw James in goal with Ellis, Max and Dylan in defence, Ethan and Hamilton in midfield and Rob in attack. Meds started to dominate the game more and the team kept in their formations brilliantly. Ellis made some surging runs from defence finding some good passes for his teammates and eventually scoring one. The pass and movement from everyone was excellent and we got further good goal from Ellis taking a healthy 4-0 lead into the final period.

And again the team seemed to get stronger ! A new defence resulted in Alex not needing to make a save in goal! With Pat in attack, he produced some ranging runs and scored 2 good goals. With a super goal from Ham, another from Louis and 2 more from Ellis - one straight from a corner - it resulted in a final score of 9-0. Or was it 10-0 ?! If you add up the total goals I mentioned above it is 10 – the referee said 9. In all the excitement of the game I must admit to not knowing the score…

All in all – there were many positives about the game – the pass and movement were a joy to watch at times. The positional play of every player was great as was the general camaraderie amongst the team. My only criticism was it should have been more ! We had several chances put wide and several shot straight at the keeper (who incidentally I thought was their man of the match) … but that is being very harsh when we score 9 or 10 goals !

So a fantastic game – all of you keep up the hard work in training and on a Saturday and carry on enjoying the Romans adventure !

Man of the match today for his all round excellent passing, endeavour and 4 goals was Ellis.
