11/9/10 - Meds Romans v Ashton on Mersey (Home)
The second game against Ashton – on Mersey started in driving rain and some technical problems with igoals! In addition, there was also a cub camp and one player sick (get well soon Max) leaving the squad down to 8 !
The game started off very tight in the difficult conditions with the ball skidding off the surface and tricky to control. Even with the Meds pressure, it was Ashton who scored first with a good worked goal.
Rob again started off very well making some surging runs and putting in some strong challenges.
James was organising the defence well, together with Patrick and Dylan, but Ashton still managed to find a way through the midfield of Hamilton and Alex with Meds just missing out on the last ditch tackles.
The game seemed to be going away from Meds when Rob scored a with the first ever league goal for the Romans which was well celebrated by all the team.
By this time we were 4-1 down with the game seemingly going away from us. However at the end of the second period, Hamilton volunteered to be the keeper and Ellis moved upfront. And what a change it was – the determination and play from all the team was inspired.
Within moments Rob had scored his second again with a strong run and finish. A lovely move from the back by James and a tricky run from Patrick in his first game from Romans moved the ball to Ellis who scored a cracking volley to make it 4-3.
And then came the controversy of the game – even with the defence of Tom, James and Dylan keeping everything out - Ashton scored from a tight angle when it seemed to everyone to have gone out for a goal kick. However even with this decision, Meds fought back bravely with Rob scoring again to record a superb hat trick !
At this point it was 5-4 to Ashton and the momentum completely with Meds- unfortunately it was time that beat us on this occasion and the ref blew for full time. However this was a super display from all the team against a very good Ashton team.
Although a defeat - well done and keep improving team !
Man of the Match : Rob Jones - for his hat trick and effort
