11.9.10 - Unicorn Athletic Crusaders vs Meds Vikings

Well no-one said it was going to be easy! Our first away game was in tricky, wet conditions against a very good side. Unicorn are one of the few clubs that can match ours for size, and their U9 Crusaders are a very high quality team. All 10 Vikings were present, and again we had brilliant support from the touchline - sincere thanks to you all!

I won't break down the 3 match sections, as I can't exactly remember how the scoring went. We were beaten, but the players attitude and effort made me very very proud, they never gave up, never stopped trying and finished the match with smiles and handshakes despite the rain and the scoreline - well done every single one of you.

The opposition coach awarded his Man of the Match to Tyler, and it was thoroughly deserved. Our goalie had a superb game, probably his best in a Meds shirt. The defence had a tough day as the opposition were very strong, but Aaron, Harry and Sam battled very well. Aaron reads the game so well, his blocks and tackles are crucial and it's good to hear him doing the Captain's job, encouraging and organising his team-mates. Harry had a great game, he's a strong lad who rattles into the tackles, one last-ditch slide tackle today brought applause from both sets of supporters. Sam is quickly growing in confidence and today was a really good performance, vital tackles and useful long clearances.

The midfield had to work double hard today, helping out the back line and then also supporting our lone striker. Crusader's midfield were big and strong and moved the ball quickly, but we played with great spirit and made it difficult for them. Xavier again turned in a really good showing, holding the centre and proving excellent support at both ends. Luke got stuck in well today, held his position and worked really hard for the team, was pleasing to see Luke much more involved. Tom is another player whose confidence seems on the up, a real trier who never stops running. Fresh back from holiday, Isabella made her league debut and slotted into midfield, as usual getting the tackles in when required. Lewis gave his usual 100% effort in midfield and also in attack whilst Charlie was having a rest, hassling the Crusaders defence and not giving them time to settle with the ball.

Up front, our goal again from the feet of Charlie, and what a finish it was! A fine through ball from Xavier (I think), and Charlie sprinted away, before coolly slotting the ball past the advancing keeper. Charlie tirelessly ran the front line and recovered from a knock late on.

We were soundly beaten today, by a very good side, but we can take a lot of positives from it, and work on the areas in which we suffered. Next week we will tackle quicker and harder. Players - you need to keep gaining confidence in your ability, we WILL grow as a team and the results will come. Parents & Grandparents - thanks again for your support, we appreciate it, please help us to give the players the belief and confidence that they need.

See you all Tuesday.
