10.9.11, Vikings vs Benchill Celtic Falcons

10.9.11, Vikings vs Benchill Celtic Falcons

A new season dawned for the Vikings, and with it a switch for home fixtures to the club’s development centre at Lees Field. This match was supposed to be the opening league fixture, but due to some 11th hour changes by the league it was deemed a friendly, although we didn’t know at the time!

All 10 Vikings were present, with Connor starting our first match as goalkeeper, a role he will share with Harry during the season.  The squad have worked hard during the summer, and right from the start it was evident that we have made great progress. We looked sharp, determined and much quicker in all areas. The tackling was early and strong, whilst the passing and movement was superb. We got a breakthrough early on, as an attack down the right brought us a corner. The ball was whipped in by Nathan, and found its way into the net off an unlucky Benchill defender, nice to enjoy some good fortune but we thoroughly deserved the break. The period continued with the Vikings firmly in the driving seat but unable to add to the scoreline. End of period, score was 1:0

The second period saw a change in personnel, but no let up in our excellent play. Benchill were well organised, their big defender regularly making important tackles and their goalie was performing very well. Our second again came from a corner, this time Charlie won the ball just in the area and lashed in a great finish. Confidence was high and our standard of football was a joy. From full back, Sam had enjoyed a few trade-mark gallops up the wing and had fizzed some shots just wide. On the third attempt he got his sights just right, and after good control on the edge of the area, he steadied himself before firing in an unstoppable right foot pile driver. End of period, score was 3:0

For the third period Lewis took a well earned rest, after putting in huge effort up front, he deserved a goal and I’m sure they will come. Our confidence was now sky high, and all the players were at the top of their game. Connor hadn’t had the busiest of games in goal, but when called upon he was very safe, and his long goal kicks were very useful. The defenders, marshalled by Aaron, retained great shape, and snuffed out the Benchill attacks effectively. Tom impressed again with intelligent passing and running all match. Nathan added to the scoresheet with a sweet finish and it was richly deserved for an all-action performance. As the match drew to a close the shots rained in, with Luke pushing up from full-back to go close twice. Isabella moved up from defence to join the midfield and again gave a terrific overall performance. In the closing minutes, Charlie cut in from the left, and everyone expected a cross......but he tidily scored his second from a very tight angle. Final score 5:0

An excellent performance and a win we so richly deserved. Every single player was right on their game and we treated our wonderful supporters to a glimpse of what we can do. Player of the Match awards went to Charlie for excellent all round effort and 2 top class finishes, and also to Harry, a player who does so much of the leg work for the team, covering so much ground whilst making valuable contributions to defence and attack.

Thoroughly enjoyed the match. The players pressed the ball early giving no chance for Benchill to control the play. I thought the effort & teamwork was testament to all the hard work put in during the summer.
